This web page contains a set of interactive drill & skill problems on significant figures, appropriate for students of high school math and science. Users enter a response within an answer box.  When incorrect responses are entered, the user can either try again or input a new number. Correct and incorrect responses are automatically recorded.

This item is part of a larger collection of Drill and Practice Tutorials by the same author.

**NOTE: The editors suggest that this drill set be done as part of a broader inquiry-based lesson. The usefulness of significant figures in isolation can be misunderstood by beginning students. Unit Title: Applying Measurement in Physics

After introducing the rules of significant figures, students can test their skills in this interactive drill & skill. We suggest setting up cooperative learning groups to make it a game.  NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: beginning students often misunderstand or overestimate the usefulness of significant figures. In real-world research laboratories, practicing scientists commonly express uncertainty quantities as a separate numeral. Good examples of how to express uncertainty can be found in the NIST Fundamental Physical Constants (Reference below).
