This Java applet measures braking distance and reaction time for stopping a car. Initial velocity is controlled by the user, and the coefficient of friction can be set from 0 to 1.5 to simulate varying road conditions. Once initial parameters are set, click "Start", then click "Brake" when you see the light turn yellow. Did you set a safe speed for the road conditions, or did you run the red light?
Editor's Note: This simulation can be adapted for a wide range of age groups and course levels since its pre-set parameters include constant initial velocity.
