This item is an article from Physics Education journal.  The authors tested groups of boys aged 12-13 and 16-18 to determine how they use concepts of energy conservation to solve written and practical problems.  The results indicated that the students rarely spontaneously use energy conservation in analyzing any problems, and that they have difficulty understanding the concepts of work and energy.  The authors suggest revising physical science curriculum beginning in middle school to give students a better grounding in one of the most important concepts of physics: energy and its conservation.
