The Modeling Instruction Program's approach to curriculum design and teaching methodology has been guided by a Modeling Theory of Physics Instruction, the focus of an educational research program directed by Prof. David Hestenes.  Six-week pilot workshops during the summers of 1990-91 were found to exert a powerful influence on the teaching behavior of participants. This experience provides the foundation for the current nationwide program of Leadership Workshops.
