This is a collection of nine video-based workshops developed to help teachers identify and implement strategies that help students deeply learn abstract science content. Be prepared for a surprise: each video includes footage of college graduates from prestigious universities who have retained grossly erroneous conceptions about fundamental science topics that are typically covered in grades K-8. How could they have graduated from top institutions with these deeply-ingrained misconceptions? The videos demonstrate how a student's preconceived ideas can pose critical barriers to learning science. Next, they introduce educational research about how students learn science and provide strategies for overcoming misconception to allow for new (and correct) understanding. Topics explored in the videos include: electricity, photosynthesis, the seasons, chemistry, geometric optics, environmental science, properties of matter, and more.
Editor's Note:These online workshops are edited versions of live, on-air teleconferences that took place in 1994. They were selected from the original collection because the topics of misconception are still areas of documented difficulty today. They are based on constructivist theory and aim to help teachers build lessons that elicit student ideas and promote mental models of abstract concepts.
