This resource is an informative and entertaining fact sheet on the history of the kilogram, the SI unit for measuring mass. It is the last remaining base unit to be defined as a "physical object". Often, it is difficult for beginning students to understand the kilogram in terms of a fundamental constant. This site discusses the 100-year quest to find a consistent system for measuring mass, introduces users to the electrical kilogram, and provides a link to a cost-free poster on mass.
The NPL is the UK's national measurement institute, established in 1900 to develop and apply accurate measurement standards for science and technology.
