Day 7: What's the Frequency, Roy G. Biv?  (1 resource)
This is a one-day hands-on activity developed for middle school by the NASA Goddard Flight Center.  Students work cooperatively to explore and verify the relationship between wavelength and frequency on the electromagnetic spectrum.

AAAS Benchmarks
4F/M1Light from the sun is made up of a mixture of colors of light, even though to the eye the light looks almost white.
4F/M5Human eyes respond to only a narrow range of wavelengths of electromagnetic waves-visible light. Differences of wavelength within that range are perceived as differences of color.

Materials Needed
Poster of electromagnetic spectrum (or overhead projection)
Adding machine tape -- 1 roll per trio of students
Red, green, and purple colored pencils
Books -- four per trio of students
Manila Folders -- 1 per trio of students
Scissors, meter sticks, masking tape

Warm-Up
"Let's review again what we've learned about light.  (Ask for student responses.)  They should be able to respond that:
* Visible light is a very small part of a large spectrum
* Light travels as a wave
* Light can be reflected, bent at angles (refraction), and can bend around edges (diffraction)
* Different parts of the spectrum have different wavelengths

"Now you will do an investigation on the connection between color and wavelength.  Refer to the overhead projection of the electromagnetic spectrum while you work.  (Pass out the Student Guides and assign students to groups of 3.)
